Good morning. Our ducted heat pump in our Bellevue house is almost twenty years old, still runs, but it struggles below freezing and the backup heat strips kick in constantly, which shows up on our electric bill. Two companies told us to replace it, one said repair could buy another few years. I'm leaning toward replacing it before it dies in the middle of winter. The unit also takes forever to warm the house in the morning, which is a new thing this year. Who have you used for heat pump replacement around here, and how disruptive was the process?

At twenty years, I'd also replace it on your terms rather than wait for a January breakdown. Last fall we went with Product Air Heating for heat pump replacement in Bellevue, and the process was less disruptive than I expected. They took out the old unit and air handler, installed the new system, adjusted the ductwork where needed and set up a new thermostat, all in about two days. The house was without heat for maybe a day, so they scheduled it on a mild week. The new unit handles cold snaps without relying on backup heat, and our winter bill dropped noticeably. Price wasn't low, but they explained what we were paying for and helped with rebate paperwork. Make sure they size the new unit based on your house, not just copy the old one.
