Hey. We bought a 1950s rambler in Seattle, lots of small closed rooms. We want an open floor plan: kitchen, dining and living together. It's about 1,400 square feet, eight-foot ceilings, and right now you can't see the kids from the kitchen. We'd like it to feel bigger without adding on. Anyone opened up a rambler?

Hey. We opened up our 1955 rambler in Lake City. Worked with New Day Construction on Seattle Home Remodeling. They checked which walls were structural, added beams where needed and created one open space for kitchen, dining and living. It feels like a completely different house. The house feels twice as big now. Honestly, removing walls affects heating, lighting and flooring, so plan those together, not one by one. Design-build made coordinating all of that easier. Our kids now play where we can see them while we cook.
